Mary Houston, MSW, LCSW

Do you struggle with burnout at your job, even though it's something you love? Are you having trouble balancing what you want with what others ask of you? Are you the person that everyone else comes to for help, but you don’t quite know how to help yourself? Or, are you facing a difficult life change, and you're not sure how to manage it while facing other responsibilities? If any of these ring true, know that you've already taken a step to help yourself by seeking therapy.

My approach to therapy comes from a psychodynamic perspective. That means I want to learn about your values, your upbringing, and your beliefs about yourself, in order to identify and change patterns that are disrupting your life. Our sessions may include mindfulness, breath work, or other exercises that focus on the mind-body connection, to whatever extent you feel comfortable. You may also work with Dr. Arvidson to see if medications may augment your experience in therapy. Together, we will develop a comprehensive plan that allows you to move towards the things you want, rather than running away from the things you fear.

I am a licensed clinical social worker providing individual therapy to adults in North Carolina. I received my MSW from UNC Chapel Hill in 2017 and have been working in mental health for over a decade. I have experience treating individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, life transitions, school/work stress, trauma, and relationship concerns.

Having worked as a clinician in ED and hospital settings since 2017, I am keenly aware of the peripheral stress folks experience when their loved one is going through a crisis. Often, these individuals need their own therapy to support their well-being and be a better advocate for their loved one. I have provided brief therapeutic interventions for these folks in crisis settings and am excited to offer longer term therapeutic supports to these individuals. Similarly, I enjoy working with family and friends of those within the LGBTQ+ community who are seeking therapy during a loved one’s transition, especially parents of teenagers who may be struggling with how to support their teen’s identity development.
